A World Vets Team Returns from Zanzibar

World Vets recently had an all female team that traveled to Zanzibar, Tanzania. Working with Zanzibar Animals Affection Society (ZAASO) they provided a 3 day island – wide spay neuter campaign. Services were provided outside of Stone Town, to the north in Nungwi and in the eastern town of Paje. They even squeezed in some time to treat donkeys! We’d like to thank these wonder women, ZAASO and Fondation Brigitte Bardot for making this campaign possible.

Vets! We have your perfect getaway this winter

As part of our International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program based in Nicaragua, we have a unique opportunity for veterinarians. The IVM Program provides veterinary skills training as well as practice to veterinary, pre veterinary as well as veterinary technology students. The goal of this program is to teach students  skills that are clinically relevant and to allow them to perform as many hands-on tasks as possible without compromising patient comfort or care.

Veterinarians participating on this program provide the instruction and are encouraged to teach students their technique. This way vets are not only confident in what they are teaching but it also allows for students to be exposed to several different approaches. Volunteer instructor positions are also open to licensed veterinary technicians. If you enjoy teaching and/or mentoring others, this is an ideal volunteer opportunity for you!

IVM Program Sessions are scheduled for December 2012 & March 2013. See exact date listings here

Happy World Animal Day from Mauritius!

World Vets is in Mauritius this week to celebrate World Animal Day. We are also taking this opportunity to help raise awareness about animal welfare and to improve the animal health situation on the island. More news of our visit to follow!

New Website: World Vets Latin America Surgical Training Center

In December 2011, World Vets held its grand opening of our Latin America Surgical Training Center located in Granada, Nicaragua. This center provides free surgical instruction and training opportunities for Latin American veterinarians and upper level veterinary students. We have since begun offering regular training sessions and have now launched its very own website! See Training Center Website

Throughout the year we also use the training center as a base of operations for our International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program. This program is geared towards North American, Australian and European students, though all are welcome, who wish to learn more about practicing veterinary medicine in a foreign country while also giving back to the local animal community.

It’s a Wrap! World Vets IVM Program 2012

World Vets has successfully wrapped up its new training program – the International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program. It was operated for 3 long months in Nicaragua this summer. As part of this program we provided free veterinary care to over 3100 animals (including cats, dogs as well as horses.) Additionally, we had 146 students participate who gained invaluable skills and knowledge, particularly in relation to performing veterinary medicine in a foreign country. We would like to thank our local partners, the 31 volunteer veterinarians as well as the 12 volunteer veterinary technicians who helped make this program such a success.

World Vets Gives Back to Local Animal Welfare Community

Although World Vets work is primarily operated in foreign countries, we take pride in helping the local Fargo ND/Moorhead MN community where our headquarters are based. Just recently World Vets made two substantial donations to 4 Luv of Dog Rescue and the Human Society Fargo – Moorhead.

To celebrate the opening of their new facility in Moorhead, MN, World Vets delivered supplies to 4 Luv of Dog Rescue valued at $2,097. The donation shipment included more than 500 lbs. of dog food to help the animals at their new facility and in foster homes. Additionally, the veterinary supplies and cat and dog food donated to the Humane Society was valued at $5,800.

We believe every little bit goes a long way and will continue to support the local animal welfare charities in our community.

USNS Mercy brings World Vets Donations to Filipino Animal Welfare Charities

As part of the 2012 Pacific Partnership mission, a veterinary team is not the only thing that World Vets has on board the USNS Mercy. To support animal welfare efforts in one of the host nations visited,  World Vets has shipped 3,000 pounds of veterinary supply and medicine donations. The recipients of our two pallet shipments are animal welfare charities Zen Cats and CARA Welfare based in the Philippines. We are thrilled at this opportunity made possible by the US Navy lead mission. We are equally as pleased to be of assistance to animals in this South East Asian nation.

Pacific Partnership is an annual U.S. Pacific Fleet humanitarian and civic assistance mission designed to work by, with and through host and partner nations, non-government organizations and international agencies to build partnerships and a collective ability to respond to natural disasters.
