Life Saving Work in Roatan, Honduras

Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands located off the coast of Honduras in the Caribbean. Even though it may be the largest island of the archipelago, there is still more to be desired in relation to the health services provided for the small animal population. This is in part due to the limited number of practicing veterinarians on the island as well as the local population’s inability to pay for veterinary services.

To address the growing need for accessible veterinary care, World Vets has been sending veterinary teams to Roatan since 2008. Our teams not only provide much needed spay/neuter services to help control the small animal population, they also provide medical consultations, in addition to life saving procedures as is the case with Jasper, a dog that was treated on our most recent campaign.

Jasper came to be castrated, though also had substantial tumors in his scrotum that were also looked after during the surgery. While everything went well with the procedure, Jasper experienced difficulties with coagulation so he continued to bleed from the surgical site. Our team suspect this was likely due to erlichiosis (a tick-borne illness) that is highly prevalent on the island. To remedy this, our volunteers utilized pressure wraps around the area to stop the bleeding. This helped, though what he needed was more blood.

Luckily there was a large dog who had come for a consultation and whose owner was more than willing to allow our team to collect blood from him to give to Jasper. And so, in the midst of sterilizations and health consultations, our volunteers found themselves involved in an emergency a blood transfusion! We are happy to report that Jasper is doing great!

We thank Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their ongoing support of our small animal project in Roatan

Successful Pilot Project Operated in St.Vincent & the Grenadines

A World Vets team has recently returned from St.Vincent & the Grenadines, a southern Caribbean nation. Together with local partners, including support from island government ministries and local volunteers, a very successful small animal pilot project* was executed.  We are happy to report that our free services benefited many disadvantaged areas of St.Vincent and resulted in close to 200 sterilizations being performed!

We would like to thank our dedicated volunteers, the Vincentian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (VSPCA) and all those involved on the ground for making this a remarkable effort. We’d also like to give special thanks to Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of this initial project.

World Vets Aids Animals in Cambodia

Earlier this month World Vets had a small scout team in Cambodia to carry out a pilot project in Siem Reap. Despite a small team size and some challenges along the way, they executed quite a successful spay/neuter campaign with many animals in attendance. Way to go Team Cambodia!

We`d like to thank Wat Damnak for hosting our campaign and Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of this project.

World Vets provides Surgical Training for Vets in Paraguay

World Vets has been working with Adoptame, an animal welfare organization based in Asuncion, Paraguay, to not only bring quality veterinary care to urban animals, but essential skills and training to local vets.

A World Vets team recently operated a week long surgical training course in Paraguay. Seven local veterinarians participated and over 300 animals benefited from the quality care and veterinary services provided! Throughout the week we conducted daily educational seminars as well as surgical instruction and training for local vets. This opportunity also afforded our team the chance to bring free veterinary services to poor barrios located in Asuncion, the capital.

We’d like to express our gratitude to Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of our efforts in Paraguay! We’d also like to thank our dedicated team members for contributing their expertise and energy to this project. And, last but not least, to our partners in Asuncion, for their passion and commitment to animal welfare in their country.

Multiple Large Scale Operatives Conducted Across the Globe

During the month of August, World Vets was in Central America, South America and Eastern Europe carrying out large scale operatives for small animals. We had veterinary teams in Nicaragua, Peru and Albania where over 700 spay/neuter surgeries were performed by our dedicated volunteers.

We wish to thank Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of these endeavors, our local partners collaboration, in addition to our veterinary teams passion and tireless efforts. Hundreds of animals benefited from these campaigns and we are extremely grateful for everyone’s contribution in realizing this.

World Vets Continues Small Animal Project in Peru

During the month of June World Vets continued its small animal project in Peru. For several years we have been partnering with Pataz Pro-Animalista Cusco and local municipalities to provide free veterinary services for animals in need. Our most recent campaign facilitated over 200 sterilizations, and helped hundreds of animals. We return in August to benefit even more! We’d like to thank Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their ongoing support of these campaigns and to all of our wonderful veterinary volunteers who work very hard to provide great care for all of the patients.

The Little Team that Could! Ecuador

During the month of April World Vets had a team in Ecuador. We anticipated this to be a challenging project as this is a very high volume clinic and our team was just half the normal size.

However, despite our limited volunteer force, our team well exceeded expectations in relation to the number of animal patients that could receive services. Working in two municipalities in Northern Ecuador, our little team was able to perform hundreds of free sterilization surgeries in just a short period of time. Needless to say we are thrilled at the outcome of this project!

We’d like to thank our tireless volunteers and leaders, PAE-Ibarra, the municipalities of Atuntaqui and Otavalo, as well as Fondation Brigitte Bardot for making this great effort possible!

“Team Roatan” Successfully Delivered despite Adverse Weather Conditions

This past week World Vets had a team on the island of Roatan, Honduras to provide free veterinary services for companion animals. With the “wet season” apparently not quite over, they experienced a couple of downpours during clinic days. Nevertheless, many animals were still in attendance and our team was able to successfully deliver services despite adverse weather conditions. Sterilization surgeries as well as health consultations to diagnose and treat a variety of ailments were provided.

We`d like to thank World Vets volunteers and local partners for an outstanding effort, in addition to Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their continual support of these much needed campaigns. World Vets has been committed to improving the overall health and well being of animals on the island of Roatan since 2008.

Municipality Pledges Support for Humane Population Control: Ecuador

For the past 5 years World Vets has been providing free high volume sterilization campaigns in Ecuador. More specifically, our services have benefited companion animals located within the municipalities of Ibarra and Otavalo. Within this time, World Vets has established agreements in these areas that have acted to cease municipal sponsored poisoning campaigns in exchange for commitments to humane population control methods.

We are happy to announce that on our most recent campaign, another municipality as pledged their support and commitment to humane population control efforts. This speaks to the positive impact and success our efforts, along with local partners, have achieved thus far in Ecuador. World Vets field service veterinarian, Dr. Karen Allum (pictured above), signed this letter of commitment on behalf of World Vets with the mayor of township Atuntaqui.

Training Local Veterinarians & Providing Veterinary Services in Paraguay

World Vets recently had a veterinary team in the landlocked South American country of Paraguay. One of the objectives of their visit was to provide free instruction for local veterinarians in performing spay/neuter surgeries. Another aim was to provide a high volume sterilization and animal health clinic for the poor barrios of Asuncion. During their visit, our team encountered very many sick animals requiring a variety of treatments and procedures. Nevertheless, they successfully executed both objectives, which benefited both local professionals in addition to the small animal population.

We would like to thank our team of dedicated volunteers, Fondation Brigitte Bardot as well as local partners Adoptame for their support and efforts that made this campaign possible.
