Ride for 5 – Cycling Across the US for World Vets

Kelly O’Keefe, a long-time supporter of World Vets, is biking across the country to bring awareness and raise funds for five charities of his choosing, including World Vets!

His journey started on July 31st with the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and will end on the East Coast in Savannah, Georgia. It’s a distance of over 3,000 miles through the center of the United States that Kelly hopes to traverse by the end of September.

Kelly has generously volunteered on a variety of World Vets projects across the globe throughout the years. His skills have reached animals in Peru, Albania and Brazil! These experiences inspired him to choose World Vets as a recipient of donations on his Ride for 5 fundraiser.

Rescue of Harbor Seal Pup in Washington

Seal pup season is in full swing in Washington. This past weekend World Vets cared for this harbor seal pup that was brought to us by Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW). This abandoned pup, too young to survive on its own, was picked up by WDFW on the Washington coast after being harassed by beachgoers. Before being picked up, it was monitored for >48 hours by WDFW volunteers and unfortunately it was determined that the mom was not returning.

World Vets provided emergency treatment and stabilization for the pup at our marine mammal urgent care clinic in Gig Harbor, Washington working under a permit issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service. World Vets then transferred her to Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for rehab where she will remain until she is old enough to survive on her own and can be released back to her home waters. Big thanks to our supporters who help make this important work possible.

World Vets marine mammal work is authorized under a permit with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries and National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

World Vets Donates Supplies to Local Emergency Department Amid COVID-19

This week we donated our supply of over 7000 units of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s), including N-95 masks, surgical masks, face shields, caps, gowns etc to our local emergency department at St Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, WA.

We are proud of our veterinary colleagues across the country who are doing the same to help those working on the front lines of the COVID-19 response.

Low Cost Volunteer Opportunity in the Caribbean this Winter!

Join World Vets in the Caribbean for a One Health concept project which collaborates with local government including the department health!

World Vets has been contributing to island health in San Andres Island since 2012 by providing free large scale spay/neuter campaigns, in addition to other treatments for companion animals. This winter a World Vets team will travel to sister island, Providence Island, from December 8 -15, 2014. Read more project details here

The project fee associated with this volunteer opportunity is significantly lower than other opportunities currently available. We are seeking veterinarians, technicians, students and/or assistants to complete our team. To learn more about what you may expect to do as a volunteer on a field service campaign, please see here

Textbook Drive Benefits Veterinarians and Students in Developing Countries

Donated books in Granada, Nicaragua

Thanks to your support, the World Vets textbook drive was a success! A variety of veterinary textbooks have been collected and distributed benefiting both veterinarians and veterinary students in multiple countries around the globe.

The World Vets Latin America Veterinary Training Center, located in Granada, Nicaragua, now has a free access bookshelf available to Latin American vets and students visiting our training center for free surgical instruction. This provides a variety of materials to those who would otherwise have no access to these types of resources. Most of the veterinary students in Nicaragua do not have access to any textbooks, so this is a great resource.

Collected textbooks were also distributed to communities in the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands and Kiribati during the 2013 Pacific Partnership Mission.

Most recently, World Vets was able to help provide veterinary textbooks to Bahri University in Sudan. A special thanks to Dr. Rasha Nouman for hand delivering the textbooks. It was reported that these books have been a great addition to the university’s small library.

Books that were distributed through the textbook drive not only cover a wide range of veterinary subjects, but they also contain up to date and reliable veterinary information and training methods. Access to these textbooks allow readers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of safe and effective veterinary practices, encouraging a healthier and more sustainable community for their future.

A True Island Effort: Colombian Military working alongside World Vets

For the last few years World Vets has been partnering with the Department of Health on San Andres Island to help control the small animal population through spay/neuter.

During these campaigns, we are also joined by members of the Colombian military who assist our teams in transporting dogs, providing crowd control and other tasks involved with the clinic.

We just recently completed a large scale spay/neuter and animal health campaign which resulted in close to 200 surgeries being performed.

We’d like to thank all of our local partners for a true island effort as well as our volunteers and Fondation Brigitte Bardot who help make this project possible.

We have another campaign scheduled in San Andres Island December 1 – 8, 2014. Volunteer opportunities on this project coming soon!

One Health in Action: Partnership to Benefit Rural Communities

Over the past six years, World Vets has maintained a constant presence in Nicaragua providing much needed veterinary services as well as capacity building. In this time, we have executed countless field clinics, benefiting thousands of animals, in addition to helping those access treatments and procedures that were previously unavailable.

We have also established a Latin America Veterinary Training Center located within the city of Granada. This facility provides free spay and neuter services benefiting animals in and around the area, meanwhile training the next generation of Latin American veterinarians in proper anesthesia and surgery techniques. The center also hosts our student program (World Vets International Veterinary Medicine Program) where students representing nearly every veterinary school in North America (as well as other schools from around the world) have come to learn, help animals in need and gain invaluable experience in international veterinary medicine.

To add to our program service and community impact, we have recently partnered with the Ministry of Health (MINSA) in Nicaragua to help eradicate rabies in the country. As part of our weekly community outreach clinics, where we take our services out into rural communities, we are now providing free rabies vaccinations for all dogs. Our community outreach efforts are a vital way to help poor communities that would otherwise not have access to or a means of obtaining veterinary care.

One Health is and remains a cornerstone of all of our activities in Nicaragua. Together with MINSA we are committed to improving the health of animals and communities in the country.

World Vets Team Returns from One Health Project

World Vets has been working with the San Andres Island Department of Health since 2012. Together we bring much needed veterinary services to the small animal population and in turn improve the overall public health on the island.

In December we had a veterinary team carry out a large scale spay/neuter and animal health campaign. Our veterinary services target both roaming and owned animals on the island.

We would like to thank our local partners, volunteers and Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of this One Health concept project.
