World Vets Celebrates 10 Years!

This year marks World Vets 10 year anniversary! For a decade it has been our mission to improve the health and well being of animals by providing veterinary aid and training in developing countries and by providing disaster relief worldwide. As the info-graphic below shows, in this time, we have undertaken 223 projects worldwide serving over 135,000 animals and providing close to 60,000 hours of veterinary training. What’s more, all services and training have been provided at no cost for beneficiaries.

Why do we do what we do? We strongly believe that all animals deserve kindness and compassion, as well as excellent care. As such, we strive to create a world where all animals have access to skilled veterinary care. To achieve this we operate many programs, most notably veterinary field projects which provide direct veterinary care, in addition to our training programs for students and veterinary professionals alike.

Our work not only depends on the generosity of individuals, foundations and public support. We also rely on volunteers to help us deliver veterinary services and training abroad.Though our programs, we provide countless international volunteer opportunities for veterinary professionals, students aspiring to this vocation and for the everyday animal lover who simply wants to travel with purpose. Since our inception we have deployed over 4500 volunteers with the mandate to make quality veterinary more accessible.

We graciously thank all of our supporters and dedicated volunteers who have been with us throughout the years. Together we have reached a great milestone! We look forward to continuing our work and having an even greater impact with your help!

World Vets benefits from Travelocity “Travel for Good” contest

A few weeks ago World Vets received a most welcomed surprise. We learned that World Vets volunteer Courtney Vaudreuil participated in the Travelocity “Travel for Good” twitter contest. We were even more shocked when she won the grand prize! What did she win? An opportunity for her and friend Carole Angelo to travel and volunteer with World Vets. What’s more, Travelocity also made a significant monetary contribution to World Vets in support of our international efforts to help animals!

Courtney claimed her prize earlier this month by joining us in Nicaragua for a veterinary field service project. This project had our team provide free spay/neuter services for companion animals in undeserrved communities and to benefit those who are unable to afford this service. In a four day period, over 200 free sterilizations were provided!

But, it doesn’t just stop there. Prior to Courtney’s trip, she was trying to collect donations of dog collars and leashes to give out during the project. While she succeeded in getting some, Travelocity surprised her with a large donation of collars and leashes during the project, which she then distributed to animal patients at the clinic site.

A common thing we often hear from our volunteers is how amazing it is that individuals from all different backgrounds and geographical locations can come together and accomplish so much good in just a short amount of time. We believe this wouldn’t be possible if our volunteers didn’t share a common goal and passion. World Vets has been very lucky in this sense in attracting outstanding volunteers that want to dedicate their time, energy and skills as part of our projects that help animals.

We depend heavily on our volunteers to achieve our mission and in turn bring much needed veterinary care to animals all over the world. We not only have a need for veterinarians, but anyone who is an animal lover! In other words, in order to volunteer it is not necessary that you have previous veterinary or animal related experience. Courtney and Carole did not come from a veterinary background yet they still filled a very important role as “assistant” in tending to animals recovering after surgery. Textbook Drive Benefits Veterinarians and Students in Developing Countries

Donated books in Granada, Nicaragua

Thanks to your support, the World Vets textbook drive was a success! A variety of veterinary textbooks have been collected and distributed benefiting both veterinarians and veterinary students in multiple countries around the globe.

The World Vets Latin America Veterinary Training Center, located in Granada, Nicaragua, now has a free access bookshelf available to Latin American vets and students visiting our training center for free surgical instruction. This provides a variety of materials to those who would otherwise have no access to these types of resources. Most of the veterinary students in Nicaragua do not have access to any textbooks, so this is a great resource.

Collected textbooks were also distributed to communities in the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands and Kiribati during the 2013 Pacific Partnership Mission.

Most recently, World Vets was able to help provide veterinary textbooks to Bahri University in Sudan. A special thanks to Dr. Rasha Nouman for hand delivering the textbooks. It was reported that these books have been a great addition to the university’s small library.

Books that were distributed through the textbook drive not only cover a wide range of veterinary subjects, but they also contain up to date and reliable veterinary information and training methods. Access to these textbooks allow readers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of safe and effective veterinary practices, encouraging a healthier and more sustainable community for their future.

Support our Nicaraguan Interns: Contribute to World Vets Internship Fundraiser

Since 2011, World Vets has provided free surgical training to Latin American veterinarians and upper level veterinary students at our Latin America Veterinary Training Center (LATC) located in Granada, Nicaragua. Short courses are offered year round and we also just launched extended learning opportunities for more in depth training. This summer World Vets was excited to welcome three Latin American interns to the LATC team. World Vets is currently training these interns in a structured, in-depth and supportive learning environment. Through this 6 month internship, each participant will receive high quality instruction in surgical techniques, anesthesia, patient safety and comfort as well as pain management. We strive to create a positive and low-stress learning environment that will advance the interns veterinary career and their ability to better care for their patients. These services are provided free of charge to both the animals and interns. We need your help to make these programs possible! You can help our interns reach their goals and apply their gained knowledge towards helping the underprivileged animals of Latin America!

Julie is a veterinarian from Jinotega. Ever since she was a young girl she had an interest in animals and wanted to help them. Her previous veterinary experience has been exclusively with large animals, but she has a strong desire to help the dogs and cats in her community. This World Vets internship represents a new phase in her veterinary career as it will provide her with new skills and knowledge involving companion animals. Every Dollar Buys a Collar! Help us Provide Collars for Animals Need

World Vets is collecting donations to distribute new collars to animals in need in Nicaragua, and around the world! Many of the dogs we see have collars made of chains, rope, wire and many other materials that often cause harm and discomfort. Our goal is to provide 15,000 adjustable nylon collars. Please help us reach this goal!

Help Animals Impacted by Oso, Washington Mudslide

Death Toll Continues To Mount After Massive Washington Mudslide

On March 22, 2014 a massive mudslide engulfed a rural neighborhood near Oso, Washington killing 42 people. One person is still missing. Homes and lives were shattered and community members are facing economic and other hardships that will continue for the foreseeable future. There is no veterinary clinic in the town and the main road out of the town is still buried in the massive mudslide making travel difficult.

The doctors and staff at Penn Cove Veterinary Clinic in Coupeville, Washington will be providing free veterinary services to the community later this month and World Vets has pledged to help them with getting the supplies they need. Our goal is to raise $1500 to buy supplies for this event, which will help the pets of Oso.

100% of the funds donated will go directly to helping the animals at this event. Please help us reach this goal!
