One Easy Way to Support the Animals of Granada

For the month of March, we are hosting a fundraiser for the World Vets Latin America Veterinary Training Center. Our center provides free spay and neuter services to the street dogs of Granada Nicaragua while training Latin American veterinarians in proper surgery and anesthesia techniques.

Over the course of 5 years we have successfully performed over 12,000 sterilizations & trained hundreds of Latin American veterinarians and senior vet students. Thanks to your support, this professional training is provided at no cost for trainees.

Life Saving Work in Roatan, Honduras

Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands located off the coast of Honduras in the Caribbean. Even though it may be the largest island of the archipelago, there is still more to be desired in relation to the health services provided for the small animal population. This is in part due to the limited number of practicing veterinarians on the island as well as the local population’s inability to pay for veterinary services.

To address the growing need for accessible veterinary care, World Vets has been sending veterinary teams to Roatan since 2008. Our teams not only provide much needed spay/neuter services to help control the small animal population, they also provide medical consultations, in addition to life saving procedures as is the case with Jasper, a dog that was treated on our most recent campaign.

Jasper came to be castrated, though also had substantial tumors in his scrotum that were also looked after during the surgery. While everything went well with the procedure, Jasper experienced difficulties with coagulation so he continued to bleed from the surgical site. Our team suspect this was likely due to erlichiosis (a tick-borne illness) that is highly prevalent on the island. To remedy this, our volunteers utilized pressure wraps around the area to stop the bleeding. This helped, though what he needed was more blood.

Luckily there was a large dog who had come for a consultation and whose owner was more than willing to allow our team to collect blood from him to give to Jasper. And so, in the midst of sterilizations and health consultations, our volunteers found themselves involved in an emergency a blood transfusion! We are happy to report that Jasper is doing great!

Scholarship Announcement | MD Koenig Veterinary Technology

World Vets is excited to announce the MD Koenig Veterinary Technology World Vets Scholarship. Veterinary technicians are essential team members in all aspects of veterinary medicine. This scholarship will recognize one outstanding individual by honoring them with a 1 week paid project fee for the World Vets International Veterinary Medicine Training Program (IVM) located in Granada, Nicaragua.

The World Vets IVM Program is designed for students who wish to gain clinical and practical experience and be immersed into international veterinary medicine. Participants receive hands-on instruction in a wide variety of clinical and surgical activities and participate in various field operations such as community outreach, data collection and much more. The MD Koenig Veterinary Technology World Vets Scholarship opportunity is open to veterinary technician students currently enrolled in a degree program at an AVMA accredited institution or a graduate not exceeding 6 months after successful completion of such program.

Continuing Education (CE) with World Vets

Did you know World Vets has a continuing education (CE) opportunity? Our RACE-approved CE course is currently offered in Otavalo, Ecuador during our International Veterinary Medicine Program.

This opportunity coincides with our International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program. As such, veterinarians and technicians who sign up as instructors for the IVM program will have the chance to include the CE optional credit as part of their registration. Learn more

Over the years, our efforts have consisted of providing spay/neuter training, large scale sterilization campaigns as well as product donations. Seeking DVM’s Interested in “Cultural Clinical” Experience Summer 2017

World Vets has a unique opportunity for DVM’s looking for a “cultural clinical” experience. A “cultural clinical” experience may be characterized as an opportunity for a veterinarian to volunteer their skills abroad meanwhile gain a cultural experience in the process.

We have such an opportunity at our Latin America Veterinary Training Center located in Granada, Nicaragua. This opportunity coincides with our International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program where vets are involved in clinical activities, which include providing surgical instruction to English speaking veterinary students in addition to participating in outreach campaigns that are set up in outlying rural communities.

Both as part of this program, as well as outside of the program, many opportunities exist to learn about and experience the local culture as well as study and/or practice Spanish.There are many Spanish schools in Granada where volunteers can formally study with a tutor, though many informal settings present themselves simply through participation in World Vets activities. For instance, socializing with World Vets Nicaraguan staff and local pet owners.

This “cultural clinical” opportunity is available for both a short and long term duration. It is currently being offered during the months of June and July 2017. What’s more, this opportunity is RACE – approved for continuing education credit.

The minimum time requirement is 1 week (7 nights) and the maximum duration is 8 weeks. There is a minimum fee of $250 USD/week, which includes your lodging and most meals. Learn more

Hundreds of Animals Helped: Cambodia Field Service Project

World Vets recently had a team in Cambodia where we provided a free high volume spay/neuter and animal health campaign in Siem Reap. Many thanks are due to the members of our veterinary team as well as the local support and volunteers who made this campaign possible. Hundreds of animals were aided and can now live a better, healthier life as a result of your efforts!
