Scholarship Announcement | 2019 MD Koenig Veterinary Technology

World Vets is excited to announce the 2019 MD Koenig Veterinary Technology World Vets Scholarship! Veterinary technicians are essential team members in all aspects of veterinary medicine. This scholarship will recognize one outstanding individual by honoring them with a 1 week paid project fee for the World Vets International Veterinary Medicine Training Program (IVM) located in Otavalo, Ecuador.

The World Vets IVM Program is designed for students who wish to gain clinical and practical experience and be immersed into international veterinary medicine. Participants receive hands-on instruction in a wide variety of clinical and surgical activities and participate in various field operations such as community outreach, data collection and much more. The MD Koenig Veterinary Technology World Vets Scholarship opportunity is open to veterinary technician students currently enrolled in a degree program at an AVMA accredited institution or a graduate not exceeding 6 months after successful completion of such program.

The deadline for the MD Koenig Veterinary Technology World Vets Scholarship Application is Wednesday, March 15, 2019. The recipient will be notified by World Vets no later than April 15th, 2019.

World Vets Teams Return from Asia

During the month of November World Vets had three veterinary teams in three different countries in Asia. We provided free high volume sterilization campaigns in Laos, Cambodia and Nepal respectfully. Each project was unique in its own way, though as part of each campaign we not only performed free spay/neuter, but also provided free rabies vaccinations for animal patients. This was important to include as part of our free services since rabies is still prevalent in these countries, and we felt it essential to aid local efforts in eradicating this fatal virus.

This was our first time working in Laos and our campaign was met with a great result and promise for future efforts.

In Cambodia our local partnerships continue to grow and in turn made additional services available for animal patients this year such as free microchipping.

And in Nepal, our free services continue to benefit the street dog population of Kathmandu to provide not only sterilization, but other much needed veterinary care.

Help Animals Abroad on your Spring Break!

Volunteer opportunities are still available for students on World Vets small animal veterinary field service projects scheduled in March 2019!

Current project locations and date offerings:

Otavalo, Ecuador: March 9 – 16, 2019

Otavalo, Ecuador: March 16 – 23, 2019

Antigua, Guatemala: March 16 – 23, 2019

As a veterinary student, pre-veterinary student and/or veterinary technician student, you may be involved in any of the following activities as part of these projects:

Pre med/Induction (All students): Assisting with prepping patients for surgery
Surgery (Veterinary students): Assisting a veterinarian in surgery, observing surgery and/or performing surgery under the direct supervision and instruction of a veterinarian.
Recovery (All students): Monitoring patients after surgery, administering appropriate post-op medications per protocol chart and grooming.

When registering, select the “Tech/Student” volunteer category and further classify your position on the registration form to reflect the student type that you are filling.

Successful Pilot Project Executed in Brazil

This month we had a veterinary team in northeastern Brazil to provide a free high volume sterilization campaign as well as surgical instruction to local veterinarians. This was our first time working in the country and feel it was quite successful with 500 + surgeries being performed and 20 + veterinarians benefiting from training.

We’d like to thank our dedicated volunteers for a tireless yet rewarding project, Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of this endeavor as well as our local partners. See more pictures

World Vets Continues its Commitment to Animals in Albania

World Vets has been working in Albania for many years to provide sterilization services at no cost in various communities to help control the dog and cat population.

This past month World Vets had a team in Shkoder, Albania to provide a high volume sterilization campaign. Our free veterinary services benefited feral and free roaming cats as well as street dogs. Almost 200 animals received care during this visit. We’d like to thank our dedicated volunteers as well as local partners for another successful campaign!

Our next visit to Albania is scheduled for April 2019. We still have volunteer positions open – find out more

World Vets IVM Program to resume Summer 2019

We are delighted to announced that our much loved International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program is scheduled to resume in summer 2019!

World Vets IVM Program is our official student program. It is both a surgical and veterinary training program for veterinary, pre-veterinary and technician students who wish to gain clinical as well as practical veterinary experience. In addition to surgical instruction (provided to veterinary students), students participate in a multi-disciplinary veterinary program and cultural experience that will not only enhance their education, but also give them a broader understanding of international veterinary medicine. The location for the Summer 2019 IVM Program will be Otavalo, Ecuador. IVM sessions will commence mid-late May 2019 and run for 8 days/7 nights. Exact dates to be posted in the coming weeks and early sign up for World Vets members will start during the month of October 2018. A deposit of $400 US will be due at the time of registration for students.

As part of this program, we also have a low cost opportunity for DVM‘s and LVT‘s who enjoy teaching and working with students.

It’s Seal Pup Season: Marine Mammals Need your Help!

Seal pup season is in full swing in Puget Sound and World Vets needs your help to support veterinary response for marine mammal stranding cases. Since 2017, World Vets has been providing veterinary services for marine mammals in Washington state and summer is our busiest time of year. To increase our capacity to help these animals, we have recently opened an urgent care unit and 24 hour holding facility at our Washington headquarters.

World Vets works in cooperation with local, state and federal agencies and provides veterinary support to stranding networks in Washington, especially in the south sound. We provide beach response for health assessments and triage, stabilizing treatments, referral to rehab centers, relocation and release when indicated and in-clinic urgent care. We also provide necropsy assistance on animals that have died to help study the health situation of marine mammals.

Our work depends on donations from generous donors like you. Your help will make a big impact for the health of marine mammals.

Marine mammals are federally protected and our work is authorized and performed in cooperation with local, state and federal authorities. To report an injured or stranded marine mammal on the West Coast, call the West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network Hotline at 1-866-767-6114. Do not approach marine mammals and stay back at least 100 yards for viewing.
