Textbook Drive Benefits Veterinarians and Students in Developing Countries

Donated books in Granada, Nicaragua

Thanks to your support, the World Vets textbook drive was a success! A variety of veterinary textbooks have been collected and distributed benefiting both veterinarians and veterinary students in multiple countries around the globe.

The World Vets Latin America Veterinary Training Center, located in Granada, Nicaragua, now has a free access bookshelf available to Latin American vets and students visiting our training center for free surgical instruction. This provides a variety of materials to those who would otherwise have no access to these types of resources.  Most of the veterinary students in Nicaragua do not have access to any textbooks, so this is a great resource.

Collected textbooks were also distributed to communities in the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands and Kiribati during the 2013 Pacific Partnership Mission.

Most recently, World Vets was able to help provide veterinary textbooks to Bahri University in Sudan. A special thanks to Dr. Rasha Nouman for hand delivering the textbooks. It was reported that these books have been a great addition to the university’s small library.

Books that were distributed through the textbook drive not only cover a wide range of veterinary subjects, but they also contain up to date and reliable veterinary information and training methods.  Access to these textbooks allow readers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of safe and effective veterinary practices, encouraging a healthier and more sustainable community for their future.

Donated-Textbooks-300x199None of this would be possible without the help of World Vets donors. We can not thank you enough for your support!  World Vets is still collecting monetary donations to help cover the shipping costs for us to send additional veterinary textbooks to those in need. SONY DSCATTENTION prospective volunteers! We are currently recruiting veterinarians and a licensed technician on an upcoming spay/neuter project in the Caribbean! Join our team to make a difference for animals in the Dominican Republic and have free time to enjoy the island too! This project is scheduled to run May 20 – 27, 2014. See more details here

World Vets has been working in the Dominican Republic since 2011 to tackle SONY DSCsuch issues as pet overpopulation. Our efforts have consisted of providing assistance through spay/neuter training, large scale sterilization campaigns as well as product donations.  As a result of these efforts hundreds of animals have received free spay/neuter surgeries as well as quality veterinary care. All of which has contributed to the overall improvement of animal health and responsible pet ownership in the area.

Recruiting Volunteer Vets for Caribbean Spay/Neuter Project

nevis1Attention VETERINARIANS! We have 2 volunteer positions open for veterinarians on our spay/neuter project in the Caribbean! Join our 14 person team to make a difference for animals on the island of Nevis and have free time to enjoy the island too! This project is scheduled to run March 15 – 22, 2014. See more details here

Nevis, a 36 square mile island, is located in the Caribbean just south of the more famous island St. Kitts. Given Nevis is such a small island, controlling as well as maintaining a healthy animal population is of great importance. Not Nevis2only does it have a huge impact on human health but the overall sustainability of island life as a whole. What presents challenges to controlling the population is that animals roam freely and consequently breed freely, which goes hand in hand with the lack of responsible pet ownership.

To help address issues of health and population control for companion animals on the island, World Vets will carry out a small animal field service project to Nevis in 2014.

At the end of 2011, World Vets celebrated the grand opening of our Latin America Veterinary Training Center located in Granada, Nicaragua.  This center was established to provide free surgical instruction and training to Latin American veterinarians and upper level veterinary students. Outfitted with modern equipment such as gas anesthesia, central oxygen, pulse oximeters, fluid pumps, autoclave, centrifuge and ultrasound, we strive to teach and practice high quality veterinary medicine.

We currently employ three full time Nicaraguan veterinarians who provide weekly training sessions in Spanish as part of this program. Prior to their employment, they had volunteered with World Vets as veterinary students during our Nicaraguan field clinics. They now provide high quality instruction in surgical techniques, safe anesthesia, patient safety and comfort as well as pain management. To date we have had over 100 participants receive training as part this program. Veterinarians and students have come from all over Nicaragua and have even traveled from Mexico, Guatemala and Peru to take part.

World Vets was recently presented with an award from La Universidad Catolica del Tropico Seco de Esteli (UCATSE), in association with their Agricultural Science Department, based in Esteli, Nicaragua. This award was given in recognition of the invaluable support that we have provided to their students in helping to shape their futures as veterinarians.

Even though it is a training facility, our number one priority is always to provide the best patient care possible for each and every animal that comes through the center. These much needed spay/neuter services as well as any additional medical treatments that may be needed for the patient are provided completely free of charge to pet owners and for street animals. As a result of this program, we have provided over 3500 surgical procedures at no cost to local pet owners and street dogs. What’s more, our Nicaraguan veterinarians provide a door to door service for rural animals; picking them up for surgery and returning them home following recovery.

Our training center not only provides instruction and training to animal healthcare professionals. It is also benefitting many communities outlying the city of Granada who do not have access to veterinary services for their animals. To keep up to date with our training center activities, `like` its page on Facebook here

Love at First Sight: The Story of Puma

JoePumabefore

Dr. Joe Zulty in recovery with Puma after his leg amputation. World Vets Cusco, Peru project 2012.

It begins in the stone streets of Cusco, an ancient city of 600 thousand people, constructed by the Incas in the magnificent Andes mountains at 3,400 meters above sea level.  There are many dogs in the streets, in doorways, everywhere.  Unlike those of the U.S., these dogs are very talented.  They know how to negotiate the streets, to stop at corners, and incredible how to avoid traffic.

Well, maybe not all of them.

On day two of World Vets spay/neuter clinic, three members of the Peruvian National Police, dressed in green uniforms, appearing strict and emotionless, delivered two dogs that had been running the streets.   Both were discovered with 2 other dogs, all four belonging to a woman who loved them but unfortunately was not capable of providing for them.  The older of the

two was scruffy but OK, the younger one however needed our help.  He had a paw that was completely paralyzed and severely swollen. Its appearance was that of the paw of the Puma in the ancient wall of the Saqsayhuaman ruins.  And there was something else worth mentioning.  Perhaps another sign from the Incas, I am not sure.  It is that moment in time that captures your heart and gives a true relevance to why we do what we do.

One of the police officers, a woman who was especially very quiet and very reserved, spoke not with words but with the hardly noticeable tears in her eyes.  Those wet eyes touched me, made their way to my heart, and reinforced what the Incas were trying to tell me.

So the next day, on the last day of clinic, with the help of local Peruvian veterinarian, Dr. Carmen Caceres, the paw that touched but did not feel the surface of the street, was removed.  Incredibly this dog, just 2 hours after surgery, was awake, standing, and wagging his tail!   That was when one of World Vets volunteers stated, “It is not too difficult to take a dog back to the U.S.  We brought a dog back from Ecuador on a past World Vets project.”

With the  assistance of Monica  Chacon of Pataz Pro Animalista Cusco, officer Glenda Anchea Garavito, Dr. Edgar Ochoa and his colleagues at Lazzie Vet Clinic, and the spiritual support of the Incas, the process  of transporting a dog from one hemisphere to another became a reality.   The forces were too strong.  It was meant to be I suppose.  In the airport in Cusco, my son Zack and I , with our new pet Puma, said goodbye to our friends from Cusco and of course the conversation was full of tears.  But special moments like this do not come often.  I was proud to be a veterinarian.  I was proud of having worked with people who make a difference in the life of an animal.  And I am pretty sure the ancient Incas were smiling from above.

**This article was written by Dr. Joe Zulty, a World Vets field service veterinarian. This article reflects his participation on World Vets Cusco, Peru project in 2012 when Puma was assisted and then adopted. Dr. Zulty is leading a World Vets small animal project to Sosua, Dominican Republic in November 2013. Read more about this volunteer opportunity here.
