Small Animal Field Projects: More than Spay/Neuter

World Vets operates multiple international field service projects throughout the  year. These veterinary field projects  provide direct veterinary services and care to animals in need on a large scale over a short amount of time, and may target small animals, equines and/or livestock. To aid in the delivery of such assistance, we have volunteer opportunities that not only facilitate quality veterinary care but also enable individuals to be a part of the work that we do around the world.

One big misconception about small animal field projects is that spay/neuter is the only service or surgery provided. While sterilizations do make up the bulk of surgeries performed, our teams encounter a variety of patient cases, which often times require emergency or special procedures to be undertaken.  On our most recent campaign held in Peru, we saw and treated a variety of such cases, including but not limited to tumor or mass removals, a perineal urethrostomy, eye nucleation, and a complicated pyometra.

With that being said, our small animal field projects help to control the small animal population. However, they also provide much relief for patients in unique circumstances and lend expertise in tackling such special cases.

World Vets Aids Animals in Cambodia

Earlier this month World Vets had a small scout team in Cambodia to carry out a pilot project in Siem Reap. Despite a small team size and some challenges along the way, they executed quite a successful spay/neuter campaign with many animals in attendance. Way to go Team Cambodia!

We`d like to thank Wat Damnak for hosting our campaign and Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of this project.

World Vets provides Surgical Training for Vets in Paraguay

World Vets has been working with Adoptame, an animal welfare organization based in Asuncion, Paraguay, to not only bring quality veterinary care to urban animals, but essential skills and training to local vets.

A World Vets team recently operated a week long surgical training course in Paraguay. Seven local veterinarians participated and over 300 animals benefited from the quality care and veterinary services provided! Throughout the week we conducted daily educational seminars as well as surgical instruction and training for local vets. This opportunity also afforded our team the chance to bring free veterinary services to poor barrios located in Asuncion, the capital.

We’d like to express our gratitude to Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of our efforts in Paraguay! We’d also like to thank our dedicated team members for contributing their expertise and energy to this project. And, last but not least, to our partners in Asuncion, for their passion and commitment to animal welfare in their country.

World Vets Team Returns from Romania!

World Vets recently sent a team to Romania to address the huge pet overpopulation problem, which has resulted in many homeless and neglected animals. To contribute to the prevention of unwanted and uncared for animals, our team worked in the city of Galati where they provided a free city-wide spay/neuter campaign.

Our team received an overwhelming amount of local support. Local veterinarians and pet owners expressed their appreciation by gifting our volunteers home made wine and flowers and produce from their gardens! Local authorities even paid a visit to our clinic site to thank our volunteers for their work.

We wish to thank our local partners, Sava’s Safe Haven, for hosting our team and veterinary campaign. We’d also like to extend our appreciation to our dedicated volunteers who have made a difference in the lives of so many animals.

World Vets Continues Small Animal Project in Peru

During the month of June World Vets continued its small animal project in Peru. For several years we have been partnering with Pataz Pro-Animalista Cusco and local municipalities to provide free veterinary services for animals in need. Our most recent campaign facilitated over 200 sterilizations, and helped hundreds of animals. We return in August to benefit even more! We’d like to thank Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their ongoing support of these campaigns and to all of our wonderful veterinary volunteers who work very hard to provide great care for all of the patients.

Recruiting Vets & Techs for Opportunity in Nicaragua

World Vets is looking to recruit licensed veterinarians for a unique opportunity in Nicaragua this summer. We seek veterinarians who are available for a one -two week volunteer placement at our Latin American Veterinary Training Center located in Granada, Nicaragua.

This volunteer opportunity will have veterinarians work with English speaking veterinary students where they will provide guidance as well as instruction in performing spay and neuter surgery. Veterinarians will also take part in community outreach activities where health consultations and preventative health treatments are provided to rural animals living in outlying communities. There are typically 3 surgery days and 1 community outreach day scheduled per session. Veterinarians can expect to have 1.5 days for leisure and evenings free.

Positions are available for just 1 week or for as long as 4-6 consecutive weeks (during summer program). Veterinarians are responsible for their own international airfare, travel and/or health insurance, dinner and snacks, in addition to any optional excursions that they may wish to take part in. Lodging, most meals (i.e. breakfast/lunch on work days) and in country transportation as it relates to the program are provided. Read more about the volunteer experience here

“Team Roatan” Successfully Delivered despite Adverse Weather Conditions

This past week World Vets had a team on the island of Roatan, Honduras to provide free veterinary services for companion animals. With the “wet season” apparently not quite over, they experienced a couple of downpours during clinic days. Nevertheless, many animals were still in attendance and our team was able to successfully deliver services despite adverse weather conditions. Sterilization surgeries as well as health consultations to diagnose and treat a variety of ailments were provided.

We`d like to thank World Vets volunteers and local partners for an outstanding effort, in addition to Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their continual support of these much needed campaigns. World Vets has been committed to improving the overall health and well being of animals on the island of Roatan since 2008.
