Scholarship Announcement | MD Koenig Veterinary Technology

World Vets is excited to announce the MD Koenig Veterinary Technology World Vets Scholarship. Veterinary technicians are essential team members in all aspects of veterinary medicine. This scholarship will recognize one outstanding individual by honoring them with a 1 week paid project fee for the World Vets International Veterinary Medicine Training Program (IVM) located in Granada, Nicaragua.

The World Vets IVM Program is designed for students who wish to gain clinical and practical experience and be immersed into international veterinary medicine. Participants receive hands-on instruction in a wide variety of clinical and surgical activities and participate in various field operations such as community outreach, data collection and much more.  More information on IVM can be found by clicking HERE.

The MD Koenig Veterinary Technology World Vets Scholarship opportunity is open to veterinary technician students currently enrolled in a degree program at an AVMA accredited institution or a graduate not exceeding 6 months after successful completion of such program.

Seeking DVM’s Interested in “Cultural Clinical” Experience Summer 2017

World Vets has a unique opportunity for DVM’s looking for a “cultural clinical” experience. A “cultural clinical” experience may be characterized as an opportunity for a veterinarian to volunteer their skills abroad meanwhile gain a cultural experience in the process.

We have such an opportunity at our Latin America Veterinary Training Center located in Granada, Nicaragua. This opportunity coincides with our International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program where vets are involved in clinical activities, which include providing surgical instruction to English speaking veterinary students in addition to participating in outreach campaigns that are set up in outlying rural communities.

Both as part of this program, as well as outside of the program, many opportunities exist to learn about and experience the local culture as well as study and/or practice Spanish.There are many Spanish schools in Granada where volunteers can formally study with a tutor, though many informal settings present themselves simply through participation in World Vets activities. For instance, socializing with World Vets Nicaraguan staff and local pet owners.

This “cultural clinical” opportunity is available for both a short and long term duration. It is currently being offered during the months of June and July 2017. What’s more, this opportunity is RACE – approved for continuing education credit.

The minimum time requirement is 1 week (7 nights) and the maximum duration is 8 weeks. There is a minimum fee of $250 USD/week, which includes your lodging and most meals. Learn more

Student Summer Opportunity: Nicaragua

World Vets International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program is our long established student program.  Based at our Latin America Veterinary Training Center, which is located in Granada, Nicaragua, the IVM Program facilitates a unique learning opportunity and cultural experience for students. Students are exposed to working in both clinical as well as field condition settings in a foreign country. They are also able to get hands on training, from highly skilled instructors, in a low stress environment conducive to learning.

We have just completed our Spring program, which welcomed thirty seven students and volunteer instructors over a two week time span. Not only did students walk away having gained  immeasurable skills, they also provided free veterinary and sterilization services for over 200 animals.

This past month World Vets had multiple teams in Latin America and the Caribbean providing free veterinary services. We operated small animal projects in Cozumel, Nicaragua and Ecuador, in addition to having a team work with exotics in Roatan, Honduras. Combined, these campaigns provided over 1000 free sterilizations and reached hundreds more.

We’d like to thank our local partners for hosting these campaigns, as well as our dedicated team members for choosing to volunteer and travel with us over their spring break!

For many years World Vets has been operating an equine welfare project in Nicaragua to benefit horses in and around the city of Granada. Horses are an important livelihood source for many households as they are relied upon to help carry out daily chores and generate income. Due to difficult socio-economic constraints, these horses are often malnourished and affected by tropical diseases and injuries from their heavy workload.

On our most recent campaign, our team met Pithaya after they were asked to stop by a nearby home that had a sick horse. Upon arrival, they discovered four-year-old Pithaya who was severely malnourished, had several infected wounds, overgrown feet, and evidence of tick borne disease.  Although he was in severe condition, the owners (two young girls and their grandmother) care for him greatly. However, caring for Pithaya has become extremely difficult for them as they have health issues of their own, and no current income source or means to earn money. What`s more, the parents of the children have left the home to seek employment elsewhere.

The World Vets team created an Indiegogo campaign to help pay for Pithaya’s extensive treatment & to provide aid to other Nicaraguan horses & families living in similar conditions. We’re thrilled to announce that we met our Indiegogo goal of raising $5k!  We are so incredibly thankful to everyone who participated! We’d like to extend our thanks to all of our supporters. A special thank you to our dedicated campaign team members Dr. Steve Kruneniski, Dr. Dana Westerman, Elisa Harvey, Cynthia Spanhel, and Amanda Headman for increasing fundraising efforts by spreading the word.

Now Available! International Student Internship

World Vets is now offering an internship opportunity for students at its Latin America Veterinary Training Center, located in Granada, Nicaragua. This opportunity is specifically geared towards pre-veterinary and/or veterinary technician students, as there is no surgical component involved for participants.

Internships are offered throughout the year and are for a minimum of one month (4 weeks), though can last up to 2-3 consecutive months. Interns will serve an auxiliary role in day to day clinic activities. For instance, helping to prep patients for surgery, monitoring vitals during surgery and tending to patients in recovery. There will also be other tasks and/or activities that interns may be involved with depending on the events scheduled during their internship.

Multiple Large Scale Operatives Conducted Across the Globe

During the month of August, World Vets was in Central America, South America and Eastern Europe carrying out large scale operatives for small animals. We had veterinary teams in Nicaragua, Peru and Albania where over 700 spay/neuter surgeries were performed by our dedicated volunteers.

We wish to thank Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of these endeavors, our local partners collaboration, in addition to our veterinary teams passion and tireless efforts. Hundreds of animals benefited from these campaigns and we are extremely grateful for everyone’s contribution in realizing this.

8 Week Student Internship Available this Summer with World Vets!

World Vets seeks an enthusiastic and hardworking student intern who is ready for an adventure! This summer (starting June 1st) we have an exciting internship opportunity based out of our Latin America Veterinary Training Center. This center is located in Granada, Nicaragua, and is also home to our International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program. The IVM Program is World Vets student program that provides international students with an opportunity to gain practical veterinary experience as well as hands on instruction in relation to performing clinical tasks.

As part of this opportunity, the student intern will work alongside World Vets staff and volunteers, out of our Latin America Veterinary Training Center, to aid and assist with the execution of this summers IVM Program. More details are provided below.

Tasks/Responsibilities

– Assist with local logistics and coordination as it pertains to the IVM Program, in addition to providing general animal care. Activities and tasks may consist of the following

  1. Taking part in animal collection and returning animals to their homes/communities following recovery
  2. Tending to surgical patients post op in recovery; monitoring, grooming, and administration of post op medicines
  3. Taking part in community outreach activities, which provide free veterinary services for dogs, cats and horses in outlying rural communities
  4. When appropriate, helping to prep animal patients for surgery
  5. Miscellaneous administrative/data collection duties

– Act as social coordinator for IVM Program participants while the program is underway. This will consist of the following

  1. Welcoming students/instructors to program housing upon arrival and showing them around the house and to their rooms (and, labeling rooms with the names of who will be sleeping where each session)
  2. Being the “go to” person should anyone have any “tourist related” questions in relation to where they can go to do this, where they can go buy that, best places to eat etc.
  3. Getting everyone signed up for an activity prior to the designated free day and getting these activities* lined up (and collecting money for this if needed)
  4. Take part in group activity that is scheduled the day after arrivals
  5. When there is free time or during evenings, organize activities or social get-togethers where people can get to know each other, have fun, and experience more of Granada. I.e. rally up people to go out to dinner, to go shopping etc.

*World Vets has 3 set activities that we offer to coordinate for IVM Program participants

Eligibility

  • This internship opportunity is open to pre-veterinary and/or veterinary technician students. Veterinary students may also be considered, however, getting surgical experience is not part of this opportunity.
  • Preference will be given to those who have participated on a past IVM Program session.
  • We seek a student that is able to commit to 8 consecutive weeks, from June 1 – July 29, 2015.
  • Spanish fluency or conversational Spanish is desired, though not a requirement.

Conditions

  • This is a non paid internship, but an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with an international non profit and with animals in need
  • There is a fee associated with this internship opportunity. In exchange for this fee, the following will be provided for the intern; housing for the duration of the internship, airport transfers (on assigned days), ground transportation related to clinic activities, breakfast, and lunches on clinic work days, program supplies and full participation in program activities, in addition to a World Vets scrub top and/or gear.
  • What is not provided (and what the intern will need to cover): International airfare, optional excursions/activities, dinner, Nicaraguan tourist visa ($10 USD), travel and/or health insurance, personal equipment necessary for the opportunity (i.e watch, stethoscope, water bottle), incidentals and anything not specifically outlined as included.

“Every Dollar Buys a Collar!” Campaign Update

Last year World Vets initiated a dog collar drive to distribute new collars to animals in need in Nicaragua. As part of our program service activities in this particular country,  as well as throughout the world, we often come across countless collars made of chains, rope, wire and many other materials that cause harm and discomfort.
Since our initial fundraiser, and with many thanks to its supporters, we have distributed over 1000 adjustable nylon collars in communities around Nicaragua. However, we are still short of our goal! We wish to continue our “Every Dollar Buys a Collar” campaign to provide collars for more animals around the world.

Recruiting Vets & Techs for Opportunity in Nicaragua

World Vets is looking to recruit licensed veterinarians for a unique opportunity in Nicaragua this summer. We seek veterinarians who are available for a one -two week volunteer placement at our Latin American Veterinary Training Center located in Granada, Nicaragua.

This volunteer opportunity will have veterinarians work with English speaking veterinary students where they will provide guidance as well as instruction in performing spay and neuter surgery. Veterinarians will also take part in community outreach activities where health consultations and preventative health treatments are provided to rural animals living in outlying communities.There are typically 3 surgery days and 1 community outreach day scheduled per session. Veterinarians can expect to have 1.5 days for leisure and evenings free.

Positions are available for just 1 week or for as long as 4-6 consecutive weeks (during summer program). Veterinarians are responsible for their own international airfare, travel and/or health insurance, dinner and snacks, in addition to any optional excursions that they may wish to take part in. Lodging, most meals (i.e. breakfast/lunch on work days) and in country transportation as it relates to the program are provided. Read more about the volunteer experience here
