If you are already a member of World Vets, you have a lot to be excited about. If you’ve debated whether or not to join, now is the best time to do so. If you want a head start in signing up for trips or simply to be the first to know about upcoming volunteer opportunities – World Vets membership is a must.

During the month of July World Vets will be providing a sneak peek to its members of upcoming 2013 volunteer opportunities. Members will have the chance to see some of the project locations and dates before they are posted on our website.

Following the sneak peek, members will continue to have a leg up with the ability to register for such volunteer opportunities before they are released to the general public. Positions on our projects, particularly those operated during the month of March, go pretty fast, so if you want an increased chance of getting a spot on a team – become a member!

Throughout the year, World Vets members receive regular email alerts with new volunteer opportunities – some of which may not necessarily be advertised on our website. Members always have the chance to sign up for trips before general volunteer registration is released on our website. Membership also provides important support for World Vets international program service.

Providing Veterinary Aid and Support in Indonesia

World Vets has a veterinary team working in Indonesia as part of the 2012 Pacific Partnership mission. This humanitarian aid mission is operated on an annual basis in the Pacific region and is led by the US Navy. Through a collaboration with partner and host nations, as well as foreign military and medical personnel, in addition to nongovernmental organizations,  medical, dental and veterinary aid is provided.

This past week our team has been working in Indonesia with US military veterinarians and technicians, the local Animal Health Division as well as Ratulangi University. Together they have provided free vaccinations and de-worming for up to 1700 cats and dogs, in addition to operating free spay/neuter clinics.

Aside from direct veterinary aid, our team has also provided surgical instruction to Indonesian veterinarians and  given presentations, commonly known as SMEE’s (subject matter expert exchanges), at the university to Indonesian students and veterinary professionals.

World Vets volunteers live on board a US Navy ship and provide their veterinary services on shore in host nations. As part of the Pacific Partnership 2012 mission, World Vets team will provide their services in four host nations this summer- Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia.

World Vets and Innovacyn team up for the donkeys of Tanzania

Later this month World Vets will have a team in Tanzania. The objective of their visit will be to provide veterinary care for the working donkey population. Donkeys are primarily utilized for hauling anything from bricks to wood to produce and/or water. As a result of their use as laborers, they often carry many wounds and/or lacerations that become infected if left untreated.

To treat such cases during our visit, Vetericyn is the ideal product. For that reason, we are extremely thankful for the support of Innovacyn.Together we hope to treat up to 1000 donkeys.

Our team will provide rural mobile donkey clinics in various communities around Arusha. All World Vets veterinary services are provided free.

Remember Papillo? Happy, Healthy & Home

As an update to our previous post about Papillo, an injured dog from Costa Rica, we are happy to share that he has found a new family with new furry friends! Papillo: happy, healthy and home in Vancouver, Washington.

Papillo was rescued and cared for by our partners at Nosara Animal Care in Costa Rica before being sent to Northwest Veterinary Specialists in Portland, Oregon for treatment.

We thank and congratulate the animal heroes in his life that made this great outcome possible!

A Friend and Dear Colleague in Need

Dr. Dana Bridges, a much-loved equine veterinarian from Monroe Washington, who is also a Field Service Veterinarian for World Vets, was recently diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment. She is a dedicated veterinarian who volunteers countless hours to help animals around the world. As a self-employed solo practitioner, she will be unable to work for 2-6 months. A fund has been set up to help cover medical expenses not paid by insurance. Every little bit helps. Please consider donating to the “Dr Dana’s We Hate Cancer Fund”.  DONATE NOW

World Vets International Veterinary Medicine Program has begun

A new program that World Vets has initiated this year, an International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program, is now well underway. This program is specifically geared towards students. It has been designed for those who are currently enrolled at an academic institution in pre- veterinary, veterinary and/or veterinary technician related studies.

Simply put, World Vets IVM Program provides students with the opportunity to experience veterinary medicine in a foreign country. As part of this program, students have the opportunity to not only learn new skills but be able to put those newly acquired skills to work. Students are involved in multiple clinical environments performing duties related to sterilization surgery as well as health clinics providing health exams and preventative care, in addition to field opportunities with horses.

Furthermore, this program also seeks to inspire its student participants to continue to give back to the international animal community once they have completed their studies.

Our IVM program is based out of our Latin American Surgical Training Center in Granada, Nicaragua. It is fully equipped with all modern equipment such as gas anesthesia, central oxygen, pulse oximeters and fluid pumps. We’d like to extend our many thanks to Fondation Brigitte Bardot for their support of this center.

The services that are provided during this program are provided free of charge to community animals in need of veterinary assistance. To read more about this program, please click here

Operating Rural Veterinary Campaigns in Nicaragua

World Vets has a team in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua this week. They are operating various veterinary campaigns. These campaigns are meant to address and target the disadvantaged animals residing in the rural outlying communities.

So far this week, our team has executed a door to door service providing de-worming and parasite treatments along with health consultations for campesino dogs. They are also operating a field condition spay/neuter clinic that is accessible to our target communities. And finally, they are getting down and dirty providing veterinary treatments to livestock and horses.

All World Vets services are provided at no cost.
