ROATAN HONDURAS:
Roatan is a tropical island only 2.5 hours from Houston by plane. On their way home from a spay/neuter projects, several World Vets members recently met with local veterinarian Dr Santiago Soto who operates the only small animal practice on this island of 30,000 people and probably as many dogs and cats. We have set up a project for September 2008 to do a large scale spay/neuter project. We will set up our surgery clinic at Dr Soto's veterinary office. Due to space constraints, some surgery stations may be set up outside. In addition, there may be a field clinic set up at another location on the island (plans are tentative at this stage). Lots of animals will be helped on this trip. Plus its a great destination. It should be a great trip!
TRIP FEE: Includes shared accomodations , local transportation, volunteer kit with scrub top or t-shirt and luggage tag and full participation in veterinary project. A portion of your trip fee goes toward project costs and donations to the local veterinarian. Airfare is NOT included. Typical accomodations are a large, nice vacation rental home (oceanfront or with a pool whenever possible). Although most homes that we rent sleep 10-14, it is usually based on double occupancy in king or queen beds. We provide additional air-mattress beds and clean sheets in order to accomodate everyone individually. Expect to share a room and possibly sleep on an air mattress. If you are traveling with a companion (trip fee applies to each person) and will be sharing a bed, in most cases you will get a "real bed" rather than an air mattress. Please let us know when you sign up.

Trip note: Our trips are set up such that 75% of your time is spent doing the volunteer project. For this trip, Sunday is the "recovery from travel day". Normally we start projects on Monday, however, Monday the 15th is a big holiday in Honduras (Central American Independence Day) so we will be starting on Tuesday. There will be one full day during the week for recreation (scuba diving, sightseeing, snorkeling etc). You will be responsible for making your own arrangements for this day, although it is common for trip volunteers with shared interests to plan outings together. There will be free time in the evenings after work is completed each day. There will also be a mandatory group meeting each night to discuss the days activities and make sure everyone knows the plan for the following day. This is our first project in Roatan. Because of this, there will be some uncertainty in the number of animals that will be brought to the surgery clinic. We make every effort to make sure the surgery clinic is well publicized before we arrive. When it is our first project in an area, we cannot guarantee the number of animals that will be brought in for surgery. We make our best effort to bring in as many animals as possible.
